Review: Lost Season 3

For the past couple years Lost has been one of the best and most loved/watched series on television. But in its third year something happened, it got some competition in the form of NBC’s monster hit Heroes and love for the series began to wain, as followers started to bitch and moan about little things in the third season (Not answering the questions they put fourth, taking too long to get to the action of the story and focusing too much on other what seemed to be meaning less stories). But all that hate seemed to die down in the series final 5 or 6 episodes, people started to come around again and with good reason. And with the new season set to return in 2008 (though with the writers strike only 8 of the 16 episodes slated for the fourth season were filmed) Touchstone/Buena Vista is set to release the Third Season on December 11th and we have your early review.

Series and Features

As the second season ended we found out that Jack, Sawyer, Kate were taken hostage by the mysterious Others. And thats exactly where season 3 picks up. Sawyer and Kate are being kept in cages outside and Jack is being kept in what is known as “The Hydra” an underwater station used by the Dharma Initiative. Jack unknowningly was brought for a specific reason (to which I wont reveal). After a recuse attempt led by Sayid, Locke, and Kate to save Jack, all out war is about to break loose between the Survivors and the Others, we kinda meet the mysterious Jacob, and a pending rescue attempt looms in sight! As I said in my intro a lot of the hate on this season is about the first 6 or 7 episodes that focused on the imprisonment of Jack, Sawyer, and Kate and the eventual escape from the Hydra Station. To me personally every episode was for a significant reason. If Hurley, Jin, and Sawyer hadnt had gotten that VW Bus up and running the end of the season would’ve ended completely differently.

As with the previous 2 sets this set is stacked with special features, the only bad thing is the mulitple menus you need to navigate through to get to them. The special features are as follows:

Audio Commentaries - By The Creators and various cast and crew
The World of the Others - The secrets and mysteries of the Others revealed by the cast and producers
Lost Flashbacks - Never-before-seen glimpses into the past lives of the castaways
Lost in One Day - An exclusive behind-the scene look at 24 hours in the life of this series
Lost on Location - A behind-the-scenes look at 10 episodes
The Lost Book Club -Get hints to the significance of the show’s literary references
Deleted Scenes
Bloopers
- Rating: 5 out of 5

Tech Specs

Lost is definately the best looking series on TV and this DVD truly showcases that, everything is lush and green, the sky is a brilliant shade of blue, and the water so clear, all the natural beauty of the Island of Hawaii is showcased here and its really something to behold. Just like the previous 2 sets Season 3 is presented in 1.78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen preserving its HD telecast format. We also get a full 5.1 Dolby Digital surround track as well as a 2.0 Stereo track. Both tracks do a terrific job bringing the show to life: dialogue is clear and crisp in the center channel while sound effects are evident in the surrounds. Overall the video and the sound more than captures the cinematic quality of the show’s presentation.
