Review: Ratchet and Clank Future

For years now we’ve been hearing empty promises from game companies that their game will look as good as a Pixar animated film. Obviously that has yet to happen, at least until now. Yep, that’s right before we even get into the review, I’ll say upfront that this Ratchet and Clank Future looks as good in parts if not better then some of Pixar’s early films like Toy Story. While it’s no Ratatouille this game is by far one of if not the best looking cartoony game to date.

But how does it stack up in the other department? Take the jump and find out.

Single and Multiplayer

Ratchet and Clank games have and will probably always be about one thing, cool weapons. This game doesn’t stray from this formula in the least. This game is loaded, some weapons are just cool show pieces like the Groovitron others are far more functional and will be what you use to play though a bulk of the game.

If all you’re looking for is a shooter heavy platformer, or you’re a fan of previous R&C games then this game is tailor made for you. It keeps true to all that is Ratchet and Clank and even manages to add some mechanics and gameplay types. With that said, games like this are great till something like sUpeR MaRio GalAxY comes along and shatters expectations of what a platformer can and should be. After playing a game that breaks the mold I can’t help but feel that Ratchet and Clank while a great game feels a bit stale even with the newly added play mechanics. Again if you love these types of games it will not disappoint, the rest of you may grow a bit weary after the initial shock of the graphics ware off.

Tech Specs

Technically this game is a home run. As previously stated there is no denying that this game is one of the best looking games out right now. Period. Everything is beyond polished and some of the special effects are amazing especially the The Gelanator gun which shoots out globs of hyper realistic Jell-O.

The game sounds pretty good too, while there aren’t any real stand out moments, there are also no weak points. Just a well rounded score and great sound effects.

Overall and Replay Value

Unfortunately this game falls into the same category that all recent first party Sony games have managed to fall into. Good, not great. Once the amazing graphics ware off you’re pretty much left with the same game Ratchet and Clank we’ve been playing for a few years now. While that can be fun, it doesn’t really present much replayability.

Bottom line is if you like platformers and/or shooters and own a PS3 this game will be worth your time. If you’re looking for that first Playstation 3 AAA exclusive this one may fall just a tiny bit short. That doesn’t mean that this isn’t an awesome game, Ratchet and Clank Future is by far one of the best games currently available for the Playstation 3. It’s just not that AAA title PS3 owners have been waiting for.

In the end when compared to this seasons other big platformer Super Mario Galaxy, it proves that while graphics definitely matter and can enhance a gaming experience, gameplay and originality play a huge part if not bigger part then graphics.
