Review: Meet The Robinsons (DVD & Blu-Ray)

The Walt Disney Company has long been at the forefront of Children’s entertainment. From their traditional animation to their work with Pixar they have held the crown for a long time, up until recently with fierce competition from Dreamworks with their Shrek series, and recent hits like Madagascar and the just released Bee Movie. But Disney has stayed in the game. Meet The Robinsons is Disney’s second non-Pixar CG animated film (Chicken Little being the first). And we have the review for not only the Standard Definition but High Definition Blu-Ray releases.

Film and Features

Lewis an orphan wants to see what his mother looked like. So he invents a machine that looks through your brain so you can see your memories. But this weird kid says he’s from the future and warns him about a guy in a bowler hat. The bowler hat guy messes with his invention and it fails. He decides that he’s a failure and no one wants him. But the kid that warned him about the guy is here on a mission to find the bowler hat guy that wants to destroy Lewis. To prove he’s from the future he takes lewis to the future. But the time machine breaks and he’s stuck in the future until he fixes it. In the meantime he spends quality time with the family. But the bowler hat guy is about to alter time and it’s up to Lewis to save the future. Nothing really original here in terms of story, just your average orphan looking for a family to call his own story.

- Rating: 3 out of 5

Tech Specs

This is my first HD & SD review and boy the differences between the two formats is stunning. the Standard Def. disc sports an anamorphic 1.78:1 Widescreen transfer which by normal standards is very good, its a Direct Digital-to-Digital transfer so theres no compression artifacts or edge enhancement to be found but the High Def. 1080p transfer on the Blu-Ray release is that much better, the colors are way more vibrant, and the i know it might seem trivial but the animations on the hair on the characters is amazing, you can see every individual straind of hair, its simply incredible.

And to go with a great video transfer goes a great audio track, and Meet The Robinsons does not dissapoint. You get a Dolby Digital 5.1 Soundtrack as well as an Uncompressed 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) Track on the Blu-Ray release.
- Rating: 5 out of 5

Overall Review

A solid effort from the folks at Disney’s 3-D animation department, but its obvious their strengths are in story telling and traditional animation. Not to say Meet the Robinsons isnt a good movie it just isnt at that high watermark the folks at Pixar have set for all other CG animated films.
- Overall Rating: 4 out of 5
