Review: Ratatouille (Blu-Ray)

I had mentioned a while back I finally got into the HD market with the purchase of my PS3 and had promised some Blu-Ray Reviews for everyones enjoyment, well the first of many High Def reviews is the latest release from the folks at Disney/Pixar. Brad Bird’s “Ratatouille”. So how is the High Definition Expierence, read on and find out for yourself.

Film and Features

A rat named Remy (voiced by Patton Oswalt) dreams of becoming a great French chef despite his family’s wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Remy in the sewers of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Despite the apparent dangers of being an unlikely - and certainly unwanted - visitor in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant, Remy’s passion for cooking soon sets into motion a hilarious and exciting rat race that turns the culinary world of Paris upside down. Like any Pixar film the premise is simple enough but it is all the little things that they throw in that make it special, not only is there something for the kids but there is plenty there for adults as well.

Feature wise the folks at Pixar have always packed their home releases with tons of goodies and Ratatouille is no different:
• Cine-Explore - Watch the movie with the ultimate behind-the-scenes expierence, featuring commentary with Director Brad Bird and Producer Brad Lewis, documentaries and informative glimpses into filmmaking at Pixar.
• Fine Food and Film - See two worlds come together with director Brad Bird and Chef Thomas Keller
• “Lifted” - Animated Short
• “Your Friend: The Rat - All new Animated short created specifically for the DVD/Blu-Ray Release
• Deleted Scenes
• Deleted Unfinished Scenes
• Gusteau’s Gourmet Game
• The Will - Interactive feature letting you play with an alternate score in a key sequence.
• Remembering Dan Lee - featurette on Pixar Character Designer who passed while making Ratatouille
- Rating: 5 out of 5

Tech Specs

Absolutely incredible, with that said, while this is my first Blu-Ray review this is not my first time viewing a film on the format, this is however my first animated film on the format and I must say this 1080p 2.39:1 Digital-to-Digital transfer is stunning and totally blows anything on DVD away (but thats a given). Colors are spot on perfect, and Edge Enhancement and Compression Artifacts are a thing of the past! If every film looks this good, then I’ve got a lot to look foward to! On the Audio end things are equally as impressive, Not only do we get an incredible standard 5.1 Dolby Digital track (in English, Spanish and French) but we also get an Uncompressed (48kHz/24-bit) English 5.1 track for those with an HD-Audio surround sound system.
- Rating: 5 out of 5

Overall Review

Easily my second favorite Pixar release (first being The Incredibles of course) Ratatouille should be in everyones collection!
