Well, the Metal Gear 20th Anniversary party was held this morning in Japan, with a couple of big things going on, the most prominant of everything being an onstage demonstration of MGS4 running on Playstation 3 hardware. Konami announced a new Japanese voice cast as well as the return of a memorable character: Eva from MGS3. No doubt she’s not as youthful and, er, vibrant as her 1960s counterpart. Previously announced, two new games in the MG universe would be put on display, one of them being the recently announced Metal Gear Online, a next-gen version of the successful formula MGS3 Subsistence created.
Metal Gear Online was shown in its first capactity in the form of a live demonstration. The game will function quite similarly to that of Subsistence’s online mode, though it uses the engine from MGS4. An RPG-like leveling system will be introduced into the game, allowing players to enchance their abilities as the progress through the game. A closed beta test will be conducted from August 20th through September 3rd, with sign ups for it beginning today and lasting through August 6th (Kojima has a knack for choosing dates, huh?). There’s no clear determination whether it is only for Japanese residents only or whether it will be an international beta just yet. Obviously it’d be wise to keep a watch on the Kojima Productions website for further updates about it.
Oh, and that other new Metal Gear game? Well, brace yourself for disappointment folks: its a cell phone game, which will come pre-loaded on a new Metal Gear limited edition Sony phone.
We’ll have footage of the demo up as soon as we get our hands on it.
