Its hard to believe that 2006 has come to an end and with the year coming to and end its time to take a look back at my list for the top ten films of 2006. As always this is my list so feel free to agree or disagree with it if you will. But in my opinion these films were the cream of the crop this year and are highly reccomended. Most are available on DVD or currently in the theaters so if you want to see a great movie then hopefully you can use this as a guide. So without further ado onto the list.
10) Clerks II

Writer/Director Kevin Smith went back to tried and true material for this sequel, that takes place 10 years after the original, this time around their working at a Mooby’s Fast food resturant. Smith has always had a way with snappy dialouge and Clerks II is no exception. Wonderful performances all around (espically Jeff Anderson). Read Our Theatrical Review Here. The DVD also features 3 audio commentaries, Deleted scenes, a 90 minutes making of Documentary and more and is well worth picking up.
09) Little Miss Sunshine

Little Miss Sunshine is a fantastic film about a completely disfunctional family (arent they all) led by Greg Kinnear as a wannabe motovational speaker, who along with his dad (Alan Arkin), wife (Toni Collette), brother-in-law (Steve Carrell), and son (Paul Dano) go on a road trip to take their daughter to compete in the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pagent. The DVD includes 2 Audio Commentaires, and 4 Alternate Endings.
08) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

While not as good as the original Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest deserves a lot of credit, it is everything the original movie was, and More. It just didnt do much to elevate the series any higher than it already was, add to the fact that its only half of a movie (the other half entitled “Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End” is due out May of 2007) and its easy to see that its trying to be something more than just a movie!
07) Blood Diamond

Leonardo DiCaprio is quickly becoming quite the actor, gone is the image ive always had of him on the Titanic, he has matured and come into his own. But its Djimon Hounsou who steals the show as a father who will do anything to get his family back.
06) Fearless (Huo Yuan Jia)

Jet Li’s final martial arts epic sends him out on top with this tale of historical chinese figure Hou Yuan Jia and his actions that united all of China.
05) Flags of our Fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima

Clint Eastwood’s two World War II epics are really meant to be viewed as 1 single film (while they are 2 completely different films), Flags of our Fathers centers around the raising of the flag after the battle of Iwo Jima. And Letters follows the battle from the Japanese side of the coin, following a company of Japanese soliders (led by Ken Watanabe) as they fight to a certain death.
04) The Good Shepard

Robert De Niro’s film about the formation of the C.I.A comes in at number 4 on my list and for good reason. De Niro has crafted a film that is very interesting despite its nearly 3 hours in length. Matt Damon gives an incredible performance as well as a cast of incredible actors (including Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, William Hurt, Alec Baldwin, and more)
03) United 93

Paul Greengrass’s incredible telling of the flight that fought back is an amazing achievement that takes a documentary style approach to one of our nations darkest days. Like it or not September 11th changed everything for us here in America. And I couldnt reccomend United 93 enough.
02) Casino Royale

The latest entry into the highly successful James Bond franchise not only resets the entire series but it is by far the BEST films in the series as well. New James Bond Daniel Craig is by far the best actor to take on the role (despite all the inital negative feedback).
01) The Departed

Martin Scorsese is back and with a vengence! With an all-star cast The Departed is by far the best film of 2006. A remake of the Hong Kong crime film Infernal Affairs, The Departed stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen, and Mark Wahlberg. Its a return to form for one of this countries greatest directors and should be seen by everyone.
