The Return of Evangelion? **Updated**

Well folks, if rumors are true, the most controversial anime series of all time is returning, ten long years after its debut. The October issue of NewType Japan is reporting that Gainax is working on a new entry into the Neon Genesis Evangelion universe, this time being helmed by none other than Kazuya Tsurumaki, better known for his work on the legendary anime series FLCL, while Hideaki Anno, creator of the series, will be supervising. Though little information is available at the current moment, stay tuned for more news.

Update [09/08/06]
Its true! Following up on yesterday’s news, Neon Genesis Evangelion is returning! Called the Evangelion Shin Gekijou Ban project, it will be four feature-length movies containing all new footage and a retelling of the storyline in such a way that the series is more inviting to newcomers yet not redundent to long-time fans like me. Unfortunately, this is not a new storyline, nor a continuation from where End of Evangelion left off or the more recent Angelic Days manga. The content and direction of the movies will be different from the core of the series, but will happen within the storyline. The first movie is being written by Hideaki Anno, but he will be the general supervisor for the new project and will leave the rest to Kazuya Tsurumaki.

The first movie is scheduled to come out next Summer, and given the arrival of Transformers next July, I think its safe to say that mechs are going to rule the nerd space for some time to come.

   NGE doesnt need a retelling… It was fine how it was. What we need is a *new* series or a movie sequel, not a rehashing of existing story. This sounds like the Escaflowne movie all over again. =X

   this has not made my decade, usually when things are retold they wind up sucking, this has ended my decade, i hate everyone
