DVD Review - Duck Tales Volume 1

For any of us that grew up in the late 80’s - early 90’s Disney’s afternoon cartoon line-up has a special place in all of our hearts. Doesn’t matter if you’re a old school Duck Tales, Tale Spin fan or if you’re more partial to Disney’s later toons like Gargoyles or Quack Pack. There is no denying that the Disney toons had a magical and special quality to them.

For most of us 20-somethings the mere mention of Duck Tales ignites a sing along that we all know…. DUCK TALES… OOOH OOH OHHH… and….. that’s all most of know. Lucky for us Disney has finally blessed us with a Box set so we can finally get a chance to memorize that blasted theme song.

DVD Review - Duck Tales

Series
This is the show that spawned Disney’s reign over the early 90’s afternoon cartoon slot. The premise if fairly simple, brothers Huey Dewey and Louie are living with their insanely rich Uncle Scrooge an old hard-ass with a heart of gold. Rounding out the cast is Uncle Scrooge’s pilot Launchpad McQuack his personal inventor Gyro his maid Mrs. Beakly and her niece Webby.

This first run of episodes are classic, this is way before they started adding gimmicky and kooky characters to spice up the show in later seasons. Most episodes almost always involve the boys and Uncle Scrooge searching for treasure or some villain trying to steal Scrooge’s fortune and his lucky “Number 1 Dime”. Which would normally sound boring, but the formula works so well for this show.

Transfer
This show is nearly 20 years old and it shows in spots. There are definitely some interlacing issues here and there and there are some moments where the video looks pretty soft. Overall however the video does the job, what do you expect from a nearly 20 year old cartoon?????

Audio
This is a pure old school mono mix, you’re home stereo isn’t going to get a work out at all with Duck Tales. With that said though the music on this show is amazing… which makes it more of a shame that we didn’t get a new audio mix. All the music in the show is fully orchestrated beautifully… Did I mention I love the music?

Along with great music the show features top notch voice acting. These are some of the most memorable voiced characters in cartoon history…

Extras
Nothing…. :(

Pretty sad that we didn’t get any extras, hopefully they will throw us a bone in some of the later seasons…

Overall
You just can’t go wrong with Duck Tales. It’s one of the best shows to come from Disney. This show is from an era when Disney was putting out some of it’s best stuff on the big screen and it’s very obvious that they didn’t take any shorts on the small screen.

This is hands down classic, excellent voice acting, amazing music and well written shows. If you have children buy this… if you love Disney cartoons buy this… if you like classic old school wholesome cartoon goodness BUY THIS!

bottom line… BUY THIS!
