widget this!Microsoft announced that it will be competing with Apple’s Dashboard and Konfabulator by releasing its own widget application called Microsoft Gadget. The widgets, or in this case gadgets, are mini-applications with specific functions that come in several forms, such as the ever popular calendar, weather forecaster or RSS feed. Standard widgets, such as those of Konfabulator and DesktopX, require the parent program to be installed in order to be used. Gadgets, however, are stand-alone applications and do not require any program installed in order to run.

Gadgets can also be embedded into other applications for added functionality, and the upcoming release of Windows Vista (formerly Longhorn) will reportedly make use of the gadget system in the Desktop Sidebar. The site DesktopGadgets.com will offer gadget creators and users alike to share and download gadgets supported by both DesktopX and Microsoft versions.
