When Scrubs first debuted on NBC I didn’t care much, at the time NBC’s big shows were Friends, Frazier & Will and Grace all of which I hate. So I didn’t give Scrubs a second thought.
Then a chain of events started that pique my curiosity.
First my former boss/friend Angela Nissel started writing for the show. I haven’t talked to Ang for some time now but she’s super funny and was curious to see her influence on the show.
Second was all the buzz that Garden State and Zach Braff was getting. Some other things that helped was the crush I started getting on Judy Reyes, Dr. Elliot was Becky #2 of Roseanne fame and Johnny C. McGinley AKA the man!

The Series
Check into the Surreal world of Sacred Heart Hospital, where the staff is bizarre and the laughter is contagious. Fresh-faced J.D. (Braff) and his fellow new Medical Residents weave their way though each unpredictable day with hilarious results.
The first year starts with J.D. (Braff) Elliot (Sarah Chalke, Becky #2) and Turk (Donald Faison the Clueless guy) all beginning as interns at Sacred Heart. Johnny C. McGinley plays the no-nonsense, tough love, quotable Dr. Cox who is like a mentor to JD and is worth the price of entry on his own. Rounding out the main cast is mouthy Nurse Carla (the very sexy Judy Reyes) who Turk falls for, The Insane “Janitor” that stalks J.D. and the man heading up Sacred Heart who is the Devil reincarnate Dr. Kelso.
This is by far one of the most entertaining shows on network television in recent memory. Usually it can be hard for me to sit through an entire season of anything on DVD, but I watched this puppy in about 1.5 days. It’s really well written and acted and should be one of the top 10 rated/watched shows on TV.
Watching Season 1 makes me really regret missing season 2, 3 and most of 4. It’s so good I’m actually a bit Sad/Mad that I don’t now what happen in season 2 or 3!!! C’mon Buena Vista… just put them out now!!! for me… please…. C’MON MAN… I NEED THEM!

Transfer
Ugh this is the black sheep of the disc. Reviewers make me laugh, some go crazy over things like “edge enhancement” but let things like this very noisy transfer of Scrubs slide, what a bunch of hypocrites.
With that said obviously Scrubs is noisy, however the show is soo good you get over that. Hopefully we can get cleaner transfers as the newer seasons come to DVD. I have been watching Season 4 on NBC HD and while the show isn’t in HD is much cleaner looking then this DVD.

Other then the noise, colors are pretty good not alot of variation here and the locals are petty drab.
Scrubs is a shot in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio aka full screen. To bad this puppy isn’t in widescreen. Even though we don’t have a pristine transfer here, luckily it doesn’t detract from the show one bit.

Audio
Standard fair on this chumpy, pretty much all front loaded, however its very clean and clear. All the Indy-ish rock music and sound effects are mixed well. All around it suits this show like a Star Wars shirt Fits a nerd!

Extras
The extras featured on season one are pretty hearty. You get a few commentaries one featuring Johnny C. interviews with all of the principle cast, the writers, an extended interview with Braff, deleted scenes, outtakes and more. The extras are spread across this 3 disk set and are pretty entertaining

Overall
The real reason to get first season of Scrubs on DVD is the show, not the transfer, audio mix or extras (even tho the extras are great). This show will go down as a classic and doesn’t deserve the shoddy promotion it’s getting from NBC, it’s by far one of if not the best comedy on NBC although The Office is some fierce competition.
If any of you out there overlooked Scrubs or though it wasn’t for you… trust good ole’ Wreckky… Scrubs is for you. It’s one of the best written shows on TV and should be on another network.
