Well, if you’ve been following our DS vs. PSP thread i’m sure you’ve noticed that a few of the bigger online publications have stated that the DS launch in Japan was lackluster to say the least. Well it looks like they were mistaken, and said that although they retailer they went to had a rather small turn out, other retailers had lines in excess of 100 people.

Already a success in the United States, the DS seems to have also taken Japan by storm. According to the Nikkei Industrial Daily, roughly the equivalent of Japan’s Wall Street Journal, Nintendo has shipped approximately 510,000 of the dual-screen portables to stores. Of these, 460,000 have been sold, with another 50,000 preorders waiting to be picked up by consumers.

All in all this is great news for the DS, however there is a huge dark cloud looming over head. The PSP launches date Sunday and this will be the true test. Unfortunately it seems that Sony is pulling some old PS2 tricks. There is a LOT of speculation that there will be a shortage of PSPs come Sunday which is pretty much what happened with the PS2 launch, and many think it was done on purpose to generate HYPE. Lets hope there are enough to go around for us importers. I know i’ll be a SAD pup if there isn’t enough to go around.
