Newmarket Films will be debuting a re-edited and remastered Director’s Cut of the 2001 cult film Donnie Darko at the Seattle Film Festival on May 29th. The new release will include new deleted scenes not included on the original DVD release, as well as new music and improved special effects. Following the festival, the film will be released on only ten screens in the Seattle area to determine if the film is valuable enough for a wider release. The films director, Richard Kelly, had this to say: “In the director’s cut, we’re deepening the mystery. It’s a more thorough exploration of what this film means.”
If this tentative run does good for Newmarket, we can expect to see the Donnie Darko Director’s Cut coming soon to DVD.
